WE NEED YOUR INPUT...

...was such a success last week, that I am going to ask for it again for two more titles we expect to receive from the U.K:

John Le Carre - Our Kind of Traitor

This latest from the master of espionage probably will not be British Crime Club Selection (the timing doesn’t quite work for us). However, we would like to make sure we order the more or less correct number.

Philip Kerr - Field Grey

The latest Bernie Gunther thriller probably will be a British Crime Club Selection. But please order anyway to give us some idea of numbers.

Please pre-order these two items. Thanks.

SIGNED COPIES NOW AVAILABLE

We sent our copies of The Glass Rainbow to James Lee Burke and he has signed them on the half-title page. I don’t believe he toured at all, so signed copies of the latest Dave Robicheaux mystery signed this way are not going to be plentiful. $25.99

Memory Wall is Anthony Doerr’s second collection of short stories and he’s receiving excellent reviews. The title story won the 2010 National Magazine Award for Fiction. $24.00

Layover in Dubai by Dan Fesperman features Sam Keller, who has been enlisted by his V.P. for Corporate Security and Investigation to spy on another employee while they’re traveling on company business. When his charge is murdered in Dubai, Sam is plunged into a lethal mix of mobsters, prostitutes, crooked cops, and corporate players. A Thriller/Espionage Club Selection. $25.95

So Cold the River by Michael Koryta is a good old-fashioned horror story set in the spa town of West Baden Springs. This gothic chiller is very hard to put down and Koryta who, up until now, has written P.I. novels, seems to have found a winning formula here. Hope he keeps going in this direction. $24.99

Blood Suckers is the first of several volumes containing the stories from The Vampire Archives, edited by Otto Penzler (who will sign your copy). Mass market paperback format. $7.99.

Daniel Silva was here signing copies of The Rembrandt Affair, the latest thriller featuring Gabriel Allon, art restorer and assassin. This is a Crime Collector’s Club Selection. $26.96

Think of a Number by John Verdon introduces Dave Gurney, who has just retired as the NYPD’s top homicide investigator. Gurney is brought into a massive serial-murder investigation when the police are unable to make any headway with a baffling killer who is fond of rhymes filled with threats and warnings. A First Mystery Club Selection. $22.00

SIGNED FROM THE U.K.

Dexter is Delicious by Jeff Lindsay is here! Thanks to you, I think we’re going to have enough copies. If you haven’t ordered your copy yet, we do have some extras. Lindsay, who was in England for a crime convention, signed them there. This the true first edition. $33.00

FOR COLLECTORS

Murder at the Moorings by Miles Burton, Sears, NY. 1934. First U.S. Edition. $65.00

A scarce title, as most of Burton’s titles are. A couple of scuffs on rear cover, else very good.

Deadly is the Diamond by Mignon Eberhart, Random House, NY. 1958. First Edition. $100.00

Collection of novelettes. Fine in dust jacket.

The Gift Horse by Frank Gruber, Farrar & Rinehart, NY. 1942. First Edition. $125.00

Very good-near fine in like dust jacket. Gift inscription on front pastedown, jacket has small chips along edges and spine extremities.

The Silver Jackass by Frank Gruber as Charles K. Boston., Reynal & Hitchcock, NY. 1941. First Edition. $375.00

Name and address on front endpaper, else near fine with minor edge wear. Jacket shows light wear at extremities.

The Savage Day by Jack Higgins, Holt, NY. 1972. First U.S. Edition. $65.00

Scarce early title. Fine in dust jacket and especially uncommon in this condition.

HARRY STEPHEN KEELER

For fans of this loony author, here is a special treat. The following are new trade paperback editions of Keller novels that have never before been published in book form. The price is $29.95 each:

The Street of a Thousand Eyes (With Hazel Goodwin Keeler)

The Straw Hat Murders

The Crimson Cube 30915

The Gallows Wait, My Lord

Strange Journey (with Teriza Rinaldo Keeler)

The White Circle

Hangman’s Nights

(Ross Macdonald) "Find the Woman" in The Queen’s Awards 1946, edited by Ellery Queen, Little Brown, Boston. 1946. First Edition. $75.00

This is the first book publication of Macdonald’s first short story. A very fine copy in dust jacket, which has a sunned spine.

Gun in Cheek by Bill Pronzini, Coward, McCann, NY. 1982. First Edition. $35.00

A cornerstone reference work devoted to the worst mystery fiction of all time. Utterly hilarious. Tiny remainder dot on lower page edge, else very fine in dust jacket.

Ellery Queen’s 1960 Anthology by Ellery Queen, Ed., Davis, NY. 1959. First Edition. $45.00

Published as a paperback original, this is copy #149 of an unspecified limited edition specially bound in hardcover. About very good. The limitation leaf is laid in and signed by Ellery Queen.

This Strange Adventure by Mary Roberts Rinehart, Doubleday, Doran, NY. 1929. First Edition. $300.00

A remarkably fine copy in a bright, fresh dust jacket with a couple of tiny nicks at top of folds. The best jacket for this vintage mystery one could hope to find.

The Kill Artist by Daniel Silva, Random House, NY. 2000. First Edition SIGNED. $75.00

The author’s fourth book and the first to feature Gabriel Allon. Fine in fine dust jacket.

A Note About Events....

When publicizing an event in the Weekly Update, I have not been adding information which might be important for pre-ordering. I’m going to start adding that information because of the event we hosted this past week. My description was not clear:

Killer Instinct by Zoe Sharp is, indeed, the first Charlie Fox mystery. However, it was written in 2001 and has just become available in the United States. The copies we are offering are paperback originals and first U.S. Editions. We have copies signed by Zoe Sharp, and by Lee Child, who wrote the introduction to this edition. $15.00 Place your orders.

SIGNED FROM THE U.K.

Terror’s Reach is Tom Bale’s second book (after Skin and Bones). Terror’s Reach is an exclusive island on the south coast of England which is home to business rivals Robert Felton and Valentin Naseniko. Now a murderous gang is targeting this resort and the residents are facing annihilation. Joe Clayton, ex-CID officer, may be the only man who can save them. $33.00

We have a couple of copies of The Terrible Privacy of Maxwell Sim by Jonathan Coe. Not strictly a mystery, this story features Sim who may have seventy-four friends on Facebook but who has nobody with whom to really share his problems. A business proposition finds him driving from London to a remote retail outlet on the Shetland Isles. This journey will lead him not only to one of the furthest points in the U.K. but also to the dark secrets within his own family. $48.00

A Darker Shade of Blue by John Harvey is a collection of short stories exposing a world of broken families, run-down estates, revenge killings, and corruption. They feature some of Harvey’s greatest creations: Frank Elder, Jack Kiley, and the much-loved Detective Inspector Charlie Resnick. $48.00

FOR COLLECTORS

The Bloomsbury Wonder by Thomas Burke, Mandrake, London. 1929. First Edition. $100.00

Very fine in a dust jacket with a slightly darkened spine but otherwise fine.

Fast One by Paul Cain, Doubleday, NY. 1933. Advance Proof Copy. $10,000.00

Generally regarded as one of the great high spots of hard-boiled fiction, this is the author’s only novel and a rare book in dust jacket. This advance copy, in the original wrappers, is of the utmost rarity - quite possibly unique. A cornerstone for any collector of pulp fiction, Black Mask writers, private eye stories or the Golden Age of American hard-boiled fiction. A fine copy in a custom slipcase.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle, Newnes, London. 1902. First Edition. $4,500.00

One of the greatest mysteries of all time. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. There is a hint of sunning to the spine, and the corners are a trifle bumped, but still a near fine copy in true collector’s condition.

Game without Rules by Michael Gilbert, Harper, NY. 1967. First Edition. $75.00

Precedes the U.K. Edition. A Queen’s Quorum title. Very fine in dust jacket.

The Lonesome Badger by Frank Gruber, Rinehart, NY. 1954. First Edition. $75.00

Fine in dust jacket with light foxing to endpapers.

Mystic River by Dennis Lehane, Morrow, NY. 2001. First Edition. SIGNED. $45.00

The basis for the great movie. Fine in dust jacket.

Spadework by Bill Pronzini, Crippen & Landru, Norfolk, VA. 1996. First Edition. SIGNED. $40.00

Limited to 350 copies, numbered and signed by the author, with a page of the typescript of his novel Demons. A collection of "Nameless" detective stories. Very fine, as new copy, in dust jacket.

(Clayton Rawson) Clayton Rawson: Magic and Mystery by Michael Canick, Volcanick, NY. 1999. First Edition. $16.00

First and only edition of this annotated bibliography devoted to Rawson’s detective fiction and his writings about magic. Rawson, a noted magician and for many years the editor of Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, ranked second only to John Dickson Carr in his mastery of locked room and impossible crimes, mainly in books about his magician detective, the Great Merlini. Large format, stapled wrappers. Very fine.
