Weekly Update 1/22/10

We are all very saddened by the sudden death of Robert B. Parker. He was a personal friend of Otto’s and a great supporter of The Mysterious Bookshop, signing many copies of his books for us. We shall miss him very much.

I recently asked you to pre-order Parker’s latest book, Split Image. I am going to cancel all orders for that title since, if you ordered, you were assuming a signing. Please let us know if you want to order a first edition of this book - from us.

There are, as far as we know, two more Robert B. Parker manuscripts at his publisher: another in his Western series, due out in the Spring, and one scheduled for the Fall - probably a Spenser.

MYSTERIOUS BOOKSHOP PROFILES

The paperback editions of Thomas Perry’s profile of Jane Whitefield are here. Can the hardcovers be far behind?

We will start sending out the paperback editions, free, with your packages.

Crime Club members will receive paperback editions with your February selections. If some of you also receive them with your January selections, don’t fret, we can’t always control the flow out of the mailroom.

THE EDGAR AWARDS

The Edgar Award nominees have been announced. We’re happy to report that Otto Penzler received a nom for The Lineup. Click on the link below to see nominees in all categories:

FOR COLLECTORS

The Root of His Evil by William Ard, Rinehart, NY. 1957. First Edition. $65.00

Fine in dust jacket.

Fortune’s World by Michael Collins, Crippen & Landru, Virginia. 2000. SIGNED. $40.00

Limited edition with separate pamphlet, #113 or 200. Fine in dust jacket.

From Russian with Love by Ian Fleming, Jonathan Cape, London. 1957. First Edition. $1,500.00

Fifth James Bond book. Aside from initials and a date on the front endpaper and dusty page top edges, this is a stunning, fresh copy in an excellent price-clipped dust jacket with a little of the usual darkening to the spine and very light wear to the top of the spine.

Thunderball by Ian Fleming, Jonathan Cape, London. 1961. $1,000.00

An absolutely stunning, virtually as-new copy in an immaculate dust jacket.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, HarperCollins, NY. 2008. First Edition. SIGNED. $125.00

Precedes the UK edition by three weeks. Winner of a Hugo Award and Newbery Prize. A fine copy in dust jacket. Signed by the much loved and talented author, who has also drawn a sketch of a gravestone on the title page.

The Dead are Discreet by Arthur Lyons, Mason & Lipscomb, NY. 1974. First Edition. $450.00

Fine in fine dust jacket.

Odds Against Tomorrow by William McGivern, Dodd, Mead, NY. 1957. First Edition. $300.00

The basis for the 1959 film starring Harry Belafonte, the first film noir of the classic era to feature a black actor. Very good in a slightly chipped and soiled dust jacket. Scarce. With a long inscription on the front endpaper by the author.

Cockfighter by Charles Willeford, Chicago Paperback, Chicago. 1962. First Edition. $125.00

PBO. Tiny bit of rubbing to one corner, initials on first page, else an exceptional copy of the true first of this uncommon book.

A Guide for the Underhemorrhoided by Charles Willeford, Star Publishing, Florida. 1977. SIGNED. $350.00

Limited to 1,000 copies, privately printed by the author. Fine in dust jacket. Signed on front end paper. An unusual memoir from this popular noir author.

Poontang and Other Poems by Charles Willeford, Atheneum Press, Florida. 1966. First Edition. SIGNED. $3,000.00

First in stiff, gray wrappers. Fine with a small bump to bottom corner. By far the rarest of Willeford’s works.

The Way We Die Now by Charles Willeford, Ultramarine Press. 1988. First Edition. SIGNED. $250.00

Limited to only 99 signed and numbered copies. Fine without dust jacket, as issued. A very handsome edition.
