Weekly Update 1/22/10

We are all very saddened by the sudden death of Robert B. Parker. He was a personal friend of Otto’s and a great supporter of The Mysterious Bookshop, signing many copies of his books for us. We shall miss him very much.

I recently asked you to pre-order Parker’s latest book, Split Image. I am going to cancel all orders for that title since, if you ordered, you were assuming a signing. Please let us know if you want to order a first edition of this book - from us.

There are, as far as we know, two more Robert B. Parker manuscripts at his publisher: another in his Western series, due out in the Spring, and one scheduled for the Fall - probably a Spenser.

MYSTERIOUS BOOKSHOP PROFILES

The paperback editions of Thomas Perry’s profile of Jane Whitefield are here. Can the hardcovers be far behind?

We will start sending out the paperback editions, free, with your packages.

Crime Club members will receive paperback editions with your February selections. If some of you also receive them with your January selections, don’t fret, we can’t always control the flow out of the mailroom.

THE EDGAR AWARDS

The Edgar Award nominees have been announced. We’re happy to report that Otto Penzler received a nom for The Lineup. Click on the link below to see nominees in all categories:

Author of the Week: Christiana Brand

CHRISTIANNA BRAND

Although no longer one of the most famous practitioners of the classic English detective story, Christianna Brand (1907-1985) had few equals when it came to producing perfectly plotted mysteries, especially those about Inspector Cockrill. The noted critic Anthony Boucher wrote of her: "You have to reach for the greatest of the Great Names (Agatha Christie, John Dickson Carr, Ellery Queen) to find Brand’s rivals in the subtleties of the trade: the precise knowledge of how to plant a clue so that it is completely fair and apparently meaningless, the ability to construct an entire series of legitimate false clues to lead the over-confident reader up the garden path, the power to produce an astonishing Least Suspected Person whose guilt is as convincing as it is surprising."

Brand, Christianna, The Crooked Wreath, N.Y., Dodd, Mead, 1946. First edition. Inspector Cockrill. Very good. $15.00

Brand, Christianna, London Particular, London, Joseph, 1952. Brand, Christianna, Fog of Doubt, N.Y., Scribners, 1953. First U.S. edition of London Particular and a superb Inspector Cockrill detective novel. Edges rubbed, else near fine in heavily chipped dust jacket with a long closed tear on front panel. $35.00

Another copy. First U.S. edition. Very good. $17.50

Brand, Christianna, Tour de Force, London, Joseph, 1955. First edition. Cockrill. Worn ex-library reading copy only. $12.50

Brand, Christianna, The Three-Cornered Halo, London, Joseph, 1957. First edition. Fine in dust jacket, which has a bit of foxing on rear flap. $45.00

Brand, Christianna, The Three-Cornered Halo, N.Y., Scribners, 1957. First U.S. edition. Fine in a dust jacket, which has a lightly soiled spine and is rubbed at spine tips. $35.00

Brand, Christianna, Starrbelow, Los Angeles, Brooke House, 1958. Book club edition. Fine in dust jacket with light wear at top of spine. $12.50

Brand, Christianna, Heaven Knows Who, N.Y., Scribners, 1960. First U.S. edition of this true crime recreation. Near fine in dust jacket with light chipping at spine ends. $40.00

Brand, Christianna, What Dread Hand?, London, Ian Henry, 1977 (originally 1968). Reprint. Fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket. Short stories. $17.50

Weekly Update 1/8/10

SIGNED BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE

The 13th Hour by Richard Doetsch is a thriller told in reverse. Nick Quinn, accused of murdering his wife, is visited in the police interrogation room by a white-haired gentleman who asks Nick if he would save his wife if he could go back in time. Nick, being innocent, jumps at the chance and finds himself able to go back one hour at a time for a total of twelve hours. This original page-turner is a Thriller/Espionage Club Selection. $25.99

Terrific to see Jasper Fforde again who popped in to sign copies of Shades of Grey. He has not given up on Thursday Next or his Nursery Crimes, but here’s a new premise from the creative Mr. Fforde: Chromatica has long been ruled by a Colortocracy a social hierarchy based on one’s limited color perception. The story centers around Eddie Russett who has a better-than-average red perception and his upcoming engagement to Constance Oxblood which is put in jeopardy when he meets the intriguing Jane Grey and realizes that his life may be as illusory a color itself. A four-color postcard is enclosed. This U.S. Edition is the true first, although we have ordered just a few of the U.K. Edition for those of you who want to "follow the flag." $25.95

Steve Hamilton, Edgar-award winner of the Alex McKnight series, has written a stand alone thriller, The Lock Artist. Michael can do something better than anybody else: open anything, from a locked door to a padlocked safe, and this makes him a hot commodity, especially for the wrong kind of people. A Hard-Boiled Club Selection. $24.99

We have signed copies of Joyce Carol Oates’ first book of the decade! The Fair Maiden tells the story of sixteen-year-old Katya Spivak and sixty-eight-year old Marcus Kidder. This story does not go where you might expect as Oates builds suspense to a horrific climax. $22.00

The U.K. edition of The Vampire Archive (not Archives) by Otto Penzler is here. This original, oversized paperback edition is a slightly smaller in size that the U.S. edition and does not employ the two-column format of that edition. Otto will be delighted to sign this edition for you, as will our own Daniel Seitler who compiled the comprehensive bibliography. $25.00
