Weekly Update 12/26/09

No authors came in to see us this week! But there are a couple of things we’d like you to know about:

We’re getting very close to resuming our individual Mysterious Profiles series. Now that the first twenty-one have been collected in The Lineup, we’ll be off and running with Thomas Perry’s signed profile of Jane Whitefield (at last!). Many of you have pre-ordered this profile, but if you haven’t and would like a copy, let us know. Limited to 100 copies. $60.00

Collectors take note: Bleak House Books only printed 1,000 hardcover copies of The Big Wake-Up by Mark Coggins and they have very few left. We still have signed copies of this August Riordan mystery. $24,95

We have two copies of the limited edition of Rain Gods by James Lee Burke. This is limited to 80 numbered and signed copies. With an appreciation by Robert Crais. In marbled boards as issued. $150.00

PAPERBACKS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED

First published in 1967, The Prisoner by Thomas M. Disch is enjoying a resurgence because of the new version of this cult classic recently shown on TV. $15.00

Book number sixty–three in the Hard Case Crime library is The Valley of Fear by A.C. Doyle. It seems only fitting in this, the Sherlock Holmes season. $6.99

Had enough of the Twilight series yet? Whether you’re a fan or a foe you’ll get a kick out of Nightlight from The Harvard Lampoon. Of one thing Belle Goose is absolutely certain, the very sparkly Edwart Mullen is her soul mate! Maybe. $13.95

FOR COLLECTORS

The Root of His Evil by William Ard, Rinehart, NY. 1957. First Edition. $65.00

Very fine in dust jacket.

The House without a Key by Earl Derr Biggers, Otto Penzler Books, NY. 1996. Facsimile. $75.00

An exact facsimile of the first edition of the first Charlie Chan novel and its beautiful, as well as rare, dust jacket.

The Black Camel by Earl Derr Biggers, Bobbs-Merrill, IN. 1929. First Edition. $2,750.00

In the earliest dust jacket with four Bobbs-Merrill titles on rear panel, rather than the letter from Charlie Chan on later states. A fine, fresh copy in a gorgeous, bright dust jacket with trivial wear at spine ends and corners. Finding Charlie Chan first editions in fine collectors’ condition has become a real challenge in recent years, and this one is a stunner.

The Topless Tulip Caper by Lawrence Block, Allison & Busby, London. 1984. SIGNED. $75.00

First hardcover edition of this 1975 paperback original. Very fine in dust jacket.

Poirot Investigates by Agatha Christie, John Lane, London. 1924. First Edition. $2,000.00

The very rare Queen’s Quorum title, one of the most elusive of all of Christie’s first editions. Original orange/yellow cloth. The spine is uniformly faded but not badly; there is some soiling and a few light spots on rear cover; page ends are foxed. Overall, a very good copy, with no wear to the cover and with hinges intact.

The Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie, Dodd, Mead, NY. 1930. First U.S. Edition. $5,000.00

Apart from the ubiquitous bit of fading to the pink spine (much less than usual), this is a fine, fresh copy in a dazzling dust jacket - possibly the best copy on earth (or elsewhere). Twice as expensive as most copies in the scarce dust jacket, but 20 times better.

Murder Gone Minoan by Clyde B. Clason, Doubleday Crime Club, NY. 1939. First Edition. $50.00

Excellent "impossible" crime novel. Very good, firm copy.

Bats Fly at Dusk by A.A. Fair, Grosset & Dunlap, NY. 1942. Reprint. $35.00

A fine copy in a fine, bright dust jacket.

Give ‘em the Ax by A.A. Fair, Grosset & Dunlap, NY. 1944. Reprint. $35.00

Fine in a bright, fresh dust jacket with light chipping at edges.

Murder in Canton by Robert Van Gulik, Scribners, NY. 1967. First U.S. Edition. $75.00

A Judge Dee mystery. Fine in dust jacket.

Children of the Ritz by Cornell Woolrich, Boni & Liveright, NY. 1927. First Edition. $1,850.00

Author’s rare second book. Non-mystery. A fine copy in dust jacket, which has a bit of fraying at the spine ends, a faint crease along the lower edge of the front panel, and a sunned spine panel which has evenly turned the purple background into blue. Still an exceptional copy.

Times Square by Cornell Woolrich, Liveright, NY. 1929. First Edition. $30.00

Spine ends and corners rubbed, else very good copy of a scarce title.

The Black Path of Fear by Cornell Woolrich, Doubleday Crime Club, NY. 1944. First edition. $30.00

Name, else about very good.

Weekly Update 12/18/09

SIGNED BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE

We now have in the signed limited copies of The First Rule by Robert Crais, and very handsome it is. We do have a few numbered copies left (we’ve sold out of the lettered copies) , so if you did not pre-order and would like a copy, please let us know as soon as possible, we think we’ll sell out by the end of the year. This edition is the true first edition. $150.00

It has been a while since we’ve had signed books by Loren D. Estleman, so we’re happy to be able to offer two of his books:

The Branch and the Scaffold is a novel which tells the story of hanging judge Isaac Parker who was the sole law throughout the Western District of Arkansas and the Indian Nations. $24.95

Alone is Estleman’s second mystery featuring Valentino. Included is a great bibliography and filmography of Greta Garbo (yes, her legend plays a prominent part in the story). $24.99

Faces of the Gone is the first in a series by Brad Parks who was a reporter with The Washington Post and The Star Ledger (Newark, NJ). Carter Ross is an investigative reporter called out when four bodies, each with a single bullet wound to the head, are discovered in a vacant lot. $25.99

NOT SIGNED, BUT

The Talented Miss Highsmith by Joan Schenkar is a detailed biography of the life and work of the very important Patricia Highsmith. A must for mystery buffs I’m thinking. $40.00

A bit of foxing, and the pale gray linen cloth has darkened, as usual- this is not soiling, but oxidation causing discoloration as on all copies examined - else about fine. The scarce dust jacket is dazzling, without a hint of wear, except that the rear flap inexplicably has been excised and replaced with a photocopy. It looks like the best copy in the world - but it’s not. Still, a difficult book in this condition.

Weekly Update 12/4/09

UPCOMING EVENT

Tuesday, December 15th 6.30 p.m - 8.00 p.m.

Brad Parks reads from and discusses his hard-boiled debut

Faces of the Gone

We have a few copies of The First Rule by Robert Crais not yet spoken for. This is the true first edition and it comes in two formats:

Signed numbered editions limited to 100 copies $150.00

Signed lettered editions limited to 26 copies $275.00

We are expecting delivery of this book within the next couple of weeks.

GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Since December is usually a pretty slow month for signings, we thought we would list some books, both signed and unsigned, to help you with your holiday shopping. In some cases, we only have one copy of a title, so this will be on a first-come-first-served basis:

London Boulevard by Ken Bruen is the first hardcover edition of this title. Ken wrote this in 2001 and it was published, in the UK as a paperback original. It remains my favorite Bruen book. This is not signed, nor is it likely to be. Ken got married this week ! Congratulations Ken. $24.99

Tony Hillerman’s Landscape written by Anne Hillerman and photographed by Don Strel is a wonderful tour through the countryside in which the late author set his marvelous mysteries. A beautiful colorful tribute. $28.99

The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson is the second book in the trilogy. If you aren’t hooked on this series yet, you soon will be! This is the U.S. Edition. $25.95
